Artists who work in art museums explore their experiences in So, I Work in an Art Museum at RedLine, on view from November 12 through December 4, 2011. This group exhibition, featuring eight artists working in five art museums across the Front Range area, provides a critical look at the influence(s) that working at an art museum has had on their creative development and production of art. Various media are employed in an effort to address this complex relationship, including painting, photography, ceramics, animation and multimedia installations.

The works created for this show reflect personal experiences, yet when shown together, they form a collective and critical voice from artists who share an intimate connection with the formal art institution. “Each of the eight exhibiting artists address a shared aspect of what is like to be an artist working in art museum”, co-producer Sandra Fettingis explains. For example, ceramicist and Center for Visual Arts administrative assistant Jenny Pokorny reappropriates the mundane instructional manuals she routinely refers to for her job into high art objects; by slip-firing and displaying these manuals as a ceramic library, Pokorny’s work both friezes and marries the relationship between back-of-house production and front-of-house product. Alternatively, by drawing on his personal experience as Denver Art Museum employee, John Geiger explores the inspiration he found in the Alvise Vivarini painting of St. Jerome featured during the Cities of Splendor exhibition. Playing on the shifts of scale and structure in the Vivarini painting, Geiger’s large floor installation merges Renaissance vernaculars with contemporary art practices. Additionally, artists Erin Algiere, Amelia Carley, Dalton & McClellan, Harold, Keith Jenstzch and Jen Schneider present alternative perspectives on their experience working both inside – and outside – the institutional structure of the museum.

The exhibition was born out of a series of conversations between three local Denver artists, Erin Algiere, Kelsey Dalton and Sandra Fettingis, about the various influences that working in an art museum has had on their artistic careers. “We talked about large influences, like how I wouldn’t have become a photographer without having worked at MCA Denver, to the almost unnoticeable differences in a shifts in our vocabulary when talking about art and artistic processes,” comments co-producer Erin Algiere. Curious about other artists’ perspectives, the three approached over twenty local art museums, inviting artists to submit work that explored themes of personal influence, identity and observation. Creative Director Kelsey Dalton explains, “We designed So, I Work in an Art Museum to reveal a different type of artist working within the art world, one who has an intimate viewpoint of the art museum.”

RedLine hosts this show in their Community Gallery, which is free (donations welcomed) and open to the public Tuesday – Friday, 10am – 5pm and Saturdays and Sundays 11am – 5pm. RedLine: (303) 296-4448

Artists exhibiting include: Erin Algiere (MCA Denver/Denver Botanic Gardens), Amelia Carley (MCA Denver), Dalton & McClellan (Art Institute of Chicago/MCA Denver), John P. Geiger (Denver Art Museum), Harold (MCA Denver), Keith Jenstzch (University Art Museum at Colorado State University), Jennifer Pokorny (Center for Visual Arts) and Jen Schneider (Aspen Art Museum).

About the Co-Creators of So, I Work in an Art Museum:

Erin Algiere (Co-Producer/Exhibiting Artist) studied Philosophy and English Literature at Warren Wilson College in North Carolina and Photography at the Art Institute of Colorado. She has collaborated with a variety of local artists on projects for “Yes Please More” Pop Up Store, Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art (BMoCA), and Denver Handmade Alliance. Most recently she assisted with the Denver Botanic Gardens’ Native Roots Modern Form: Plants, People and the Art of Allan Houser exhibition and now works as the MCA Department of Edible Structures - Event and Rental Manager, co-producing programs such as Black Sheep Fridays.

Sandra Fettingis (Co-Producer/Curatorial Consultant) is the MCA Denver Shop Gift Buyer, and an active Denver artist, originally from Chicago. She studied at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, CA, ultimately earning a BA in Photography from Columbia College Chicago. Her work has lead to commissions, grants, public works and exhibits at such venues as Black Book Gallery, Illiterate Gallery, Emmanuel Gallery and The Bridge Art Fair Chicago. Sandra is also the founder and a producer of PROJECT HELLO.

Kelsey Dalton (Creative Director/Exhibiting Artist) formerly worked for the MCA Denver as the Special Events and Cafe Assistant Manager and is currently pursuing an MFA in Studio Arts from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago, where she works for the Visiting Artists program. As an artist, she makes works as part of the collaborative, Dalton & McClellan. Collaboration is fundamental and an inextricable element to the purpose, design and process of the works of Dalton & McClellan, expressed through the medium of painting.

RESIDENT ARTIST ANNUAL FUNDRAISER: Reserve your Halloween weekend for RedLine's Artist Bacchanal. This annual fundraiser was created to support emerging contemporary artists, art, and RedLine's educational outreach programs. This event comes the week before our Resident Artist Exhibition. This year the exhibition is entitled "AU: Exchange" Cortney Lane Stell, curator of the exhibition will symbolically transform RedLine through artist’s creative engagement with gold; she explains,

In the popular imagination, gold conjures up ideas of preciousness, consumerism, finance, value, malleability, even common identity.  What material better links our current economic state with the economies of the past?

This exhibition reconsiders gold, and the relationship of RedLine artists with the material and the economy. Each artist will be given a 2.5 gram gold bar to use in his or her work. The artists can choose to sell, trade, or use the gold in any manner they choose to create an artwork for the exhibition. The intention of this critical exploration of the material is to reveal the open nature of gold in both form and concept in relation to each artist’s individual practice.

RedLine’s annual fundraiser is designed to give visitors a participatory prelude to the upcoming exhibition and support RedLine Resident Artist Program. We will invite attendees to engage in gold through costume, programming and performance.

The Party & Program

Theme: Gold

Costume: Bling requested, gold suggested. Costumes are not required, just desired.

Performance: Collaborative works by Ballet Nouveau Colorado and RedLine Artists

Music: Soul & Jazz DJs from the Denver Hip Hop Congress, which will culminate in a slam poetry jam and DJ battle at 10pm.

Menu & Bar: Gold-themed food and beverage stations

Midnight Toast: Goldschlager Toast given by Denver-based drag queen Felony Misdemeanor. Felony will also perform in gold between 9-10pm.

Sat, 18 Jun 2011 13:09:00 -0700 say hello to erin algiere! http://projecthello.posterous.com/say-hello-to-erin-algiere-21556 http://projecthello.posterous.com/say-hello-to-erin-algiere-21556

get to know erin algiere, PROJECT HELLO'S photography amabassador!

ph: tell us who you are, where you are from and how long you have been in denver.EA: I am Erin Algiere and I've been in Denver for about 4 years. This is my second year with project hello

ph: what do you do as a creative, and how long have you been doing it?
EA: I've "officially" been a photographer for 3 years now, although I've been making photos for about 10.

ph: what is your favorite thing about denver's creative community? what would you like to see happen in the denver's creative community?
EA: The Denver creative community is accessible and welcoming. People are into supporting each other's endeavors, which is vital to the health and growth of both individual creatives and the community as a whole. I'd like to see more critical art shows happening in Denver. We have an amazing, thriving craft community, which is inspiring, but I'd like to see more grass-root level shows that examine an idea and push a concept. I like project hello because it unites a panoply of creative disciplines under one concept.

ph: if you could offer advice to an emerging creator what would it be?
EA: Read the book Art and Fear. And work your ass off for your vision.

ph: within your field, who are your favorite creators?
EA: This is such a hard question! There are so many talented people working with photography and digital media. I am deeply inspired by french photographer and philosopher Sophie Calle. I enjoy the work of South African photographer Roger Ballen. And I will always have a place in my heart for the work of Arthur Tress, David LaChapelle, Maggie Taylor, Annie Leibovitz, and Gregory Crewdson, all of whom introduced me to photography's potential as a critical medium.

get to know alicia ordal, PROJECT HELLO'S installation/sculpture ambassador!

ph: tell us who you are, where you are from and how long you have been in Denver.
AO: My name is Alicia Ordal. I was born in Minnesota and raised here in Colorado. I’ve been in Denver for about… seven years now? Wow, it’s been a long time.

ph: what do you do as a creative, and how long have you been doing it?
AO: I’m a multimedia artist with a bachelor’s degree in Drawing/Painting. My work over the past three years has focused mainly on collage, video and sculpture. I think I’ve been making things since I was old enough to hold a crayon and draw scary looking stick figures.

ph: what is your favorite thing about Denver’s creative community? What would you like to see happen in Denver’s creative community?
AO: There’s a lot of freedom to do what you want in Denver’s creative community. It’s also okay to try new things and fail at them. Our scene is generally very supportive, though there are times when I think we could have a more critical discussion happening. Something I’d like to see more of in Denver is a crossover between visual art, music, writing, dance, theater and technology. Things like Project Hello are a great way to bridge that gap.

ph: if you could offer advice to an emerging creator what would it be?
AO: Don’t give up! Pursuing anything in the arts can be hard, especially financially. People won’t always understand what the hell you’re making, but life is a lot more satisfying when you can engage with it creatively. And those moments when you find your voice or discover something new in your work makes all the downer stuff worth it!

ph: within your field, who are your favorite creators?
AO: A couple artists who’s work is really fascinating: Steina Vasulka, David Altmejd, Miranda July, Laurie Anderson and Joseph Beuys.

get to know derek keenan, aka mukee, PROJECT HELLO'S jewelry ambassador!

ph: tell us who you are, where you are from and how long you have been in denver.
DK:I am Derek Keenan, I was born here in Denver and lived here all my life aside from two years that I was away in Africa as a Peace Corps volunteer.

ph: what do you do as a creative, and how long have you been doing it?
DK: I live as a creative but I think the thing people would currently associate me with is the brand I've been working on called, Mukee. I've been working on Mukee now for three years. Mukee is know for its jewelry and belt buckles made from reclaimed skateboards.

ph: what is your favorite thing about denver's creative community? what would you like to see happen in the denver's creative community?
DK: My favorite thing about Denver is that it really still is like a wild west town, it feels like anything could happen and there is always this feeling that its going to blow up at any minute. I'd like to see the Denver creative community go bigger and take over the world.

ph: if you could offer advice to an emerging creator what would it be?
DK: My advice to emerging creators is to be prepared to make sacrifices and do whatever you've got to do to make things work. Don't let anything be a limitation just figure out how to work around problems and go for it!

ph:
within your field, who are your favorite creators?
DK: I make jewelry right now but I'm not sure that is my field? I'll continue to make jewelry under the Mukee brand name but I want to add more product lines in the near future. Anyone who is into a DIY lifestyle is among my favorite creators.

get to know baily rose, PROJECT HELLO'S fashion ambassador!

ph: tell us who you are, where you are from and how long you have been in denver.
BR: Maison de Rose (House of Rose), Baily Rose aka B.Rose BrosBeforeHoes, Elizabeth, Biddy... from Red Cliff, Colorado... back in the mountains for the summer, but have been residing in Denver for the past 3 years.

ph: what do you do as a creative, and how long have you been doing it?
BR: I've been curating art & fashion shows / events & making one of a kind fashion pieces since my sophomore year of college -- 7 years now. I have recently gotten into producing short films.

ph: what is your favorite thing about denver's creative community? what would you like to see happen in the denver's creative community?
BR: The ARTISTS. I am grateful to be surrounded by an incredibly talented & supportive art family. Denver accepted me with open arms & took me in as one of their own. Denver is my muse.

I would like to see a blossoming cottage industry fashion scene develop in Denver . . . & obviously more people wearing local fashion

ph: if you could offer advice to an emerging creator what would it be?
BR: Depends on what field they are in .... In the end though: Trust your intuition.

ph: within your field, who are your favorite creators?
BR: Rachel Znerold - We used to throw fashion shows back in the day in Boulder. Before I even learned to define myself as a reconstructed / recycled fashion designer I met Rachel - we were doing the same things with fashion & I have looked up to her ever since. Her lust for life and art without caring about medium boundaries have always deeply resonated with me. Deep Respect.

Illse Romoth - My couture teacher at the Emily Griffith Opportunity School. Not only does she create, she teaches old school couture techniques that you won't be able to learn anywhere except right here in Denver, Colorado (unless you wanted to move to Europe & sew buttons as a 1st hand in a real couture house for years upon years until they finally teach you draping, pattern drafting & grading).

Wed, 01 Jun 2011 13:34:00 -0700 say hello to mark rockswold! http://projecthello.posterous.com/say-hello-to-mark-rockswold http://projecthello.posterous.com/say-hello-to-mark-rockswold

get to know mark rockswold, PROJECT HELLO'S literary ambassador!

ph: tell us who you are, where you are from and how long you have been in denver.
MR: Hello, my name is Mark Rockswold and I came to Colorado in 2006 for graduate school, but I didn’t move to Denver until 2009. I’m originally from Mankato, a small college town in the middle of the Minnesota River Valley. I’m the only person in my extended family living outside the state, so I go back and forth a few times a year.

ph: what do you do as a creative, and how long have you been doing it?
MR: I write and read poetry for the most part—it’s what I’ve spent the past 8 years or so studying and doing, so poetry is number one. I also co-publish a not-for-profit online journal and print press called SpringGun with Erin Costello. Our online journal of poetry, flash fiction, essays, interviews, and digital art is published bi-annually (Fall and Spring). We announce reading periods and submission details on our website (www.springgunpress.com/submit). Right now we only publish chapbook and full-length books of poetry with our print press. Our open reading period for book manuscripts this year is May 1-July 1.

ph: what is your favorite thing about denver's creative community? what would you like to see happen in denver's creative community?
MR:My personal experience with the poetry community has been an extremely positive and fulfilling one.We have become close friends which I’m grateful for, and it really makes Denver special for me. What
I’d love to see happen in Denver’s creative community is more interaction/collaboration between writers and artists—Steve Katz (a former CU at Boulder professor) once said that Creative Writing programs belong in Art, not English Departments. As writers, we tend to be isolated from other forms of art like music, dance, sculpture, painting, etc, which is really a shame. There are dozens of writers in Denver and the Front Range that I know and see regularly, but maybe 2 or 3 visual artists and dancers. That’s why I think gatherings like Project Hello are especially valuable to writers, as well as the artistic community at large.

ph: if you could offer advice to an emerging creator what would it be?

MR: Study as much as you can. Look at the long and diverse tradition that has come before you in order to understand what has been done and what is possible in your medium(s). Think about not only what you want to create, but why you want to create it.

ph: within your field, who are your favorite creators?

MR: A few of my favorite local writers are Richard Froude, Julia Cohen, J. Michael Martinez, Sommer Browning (Julia and Sommer run the Bad Shadow Affair reading series at Lost Lake Lounge), Julie Carr, Laird Hunt, Danielle Dutton, Sidney Goldfarb, and Noah Eli Gordon. My favorite Denver-based small presses are Counterpath, Letter Machine Editions, Horse Less Press, Fast Forward Press, Flying Guillotine, Octopus, and Titmouse Magazine which features local contributors exclusively. Titmouse runs a fantastic reading/performance series at the downtown Dikeou Collection. Check them out on facebook for details.

Tue, 24 May 2011 10:59:00 -0700 say hello to debbie clapper! http://projecthello.posterous.com/say-hello-to-debbie-clapper http://projecthello.posterous.com/say-hello-to-debbie-clapper

get to know debbie clapper, PROJECT HELLO'S design ambassador!

ph: tell us who you are, where you are from and how long you have been in denver.

DC: My name is Debbie Clapper and I am independent artist/graphic designer. I'm originally from OH (Cleveland area), but have been living in Denver since 1998.

ph: what do you do as a creative, and how long have you been doing it?
DC: Let's see... I'm the boss of myself. I run my little design studio, gneural llc, out of my house. gneural has been up and running professionally since 2001. I primarily work in print with a focus on custom patterns & typographics, but I will take on the occasional web project. I'm also an artist. It's been a huge blessing to be able to work steadily in both the design world and art world simultaneously. Like most artists, I've been drawing since I was first able to hold a crayon, however, I can say that I've been drawing on a regular basis since I was 9 years old.

ph: what is your favorite thing about denver's creative community? what would you like to see happen in the denver's creative community?
DC: I feel like Denver's creative community is very supportive and encouraging of each other. I'm sure quite a bit of that has to do with the fact that there is still much room for growth, but it's nice to be in a place that isn't cutthroat like NYC, SF, etc. People are actually given opportunities and a chance to evolve in their work. I feel like the Denver community is providing a platform for creatives to step up and put Denver on the map.

I would like to see more people staying in Denver/Boulder to pursue their careers instead of taking off to a bigger city in hopes of "making it". It would be sad if the community started to trail off and disperse into nothing (which, by the way, I don't believe will happen).

ph: if you could offer advice to an emerging creator what would it be?
DC: Don't pursue things you aren't passionate about. Having that passion/drive is key. Also, learn to handle criticism (constructive & otherwise). As a creative, you will hear it all; from the folks who cheer you on as though they are your mother to the naysayers and discouragers who want to poo-poo everything you do. All of it is okay. You just have to learn what you can from each and then continue on.

ph: within your field, who are your favorite creators?
DC: A few of my fave designers are: Vaughan OliverMarian Bantjes, Dan Funderburgh, Antoine+Manuel and Margo Chase (of whom I once met & took the doodles she left on the table - I couldn't help myself).

get to know becky wareing steele, PROJECT HELLO'S craft ambassador!

ph: tell us who you are, where you are from and how long you have been in denver.

BWS: Hello, my name is Becky Wareing Steele and I am excited to be this year's Craft Ambassador for Project Hello. I grew up in New Jersey but I've been calling Colorado my home now for the past 15 years. I've been living in Denver for the past 5 years and I love how young the city is in many ways, there is so much room for growth and creativity.

ph:
what do you do as a creative, and how long have you been doing it?

BWS: I've been creating for as long as I can remember. I grew up in a creative household where we were encouraged to explore different artistic mediums, wether it be art, music, cooking, writing, you name it. My parents spent a lot of time taking my brother and I to museum's and various other cultural institutions which I think helped to shape my love of the arts. I started selling my original artwork door to door when I about 6 years old to our neighbors and since then it's grown into a craft-based business, becky's buttons & things. I started this creative endeavor about nine years ago simply by making custom buttons for my friend and family and now it's grown into something a lot bigger. My focus has most recently been on dioramas but I also love working with embroidery, crochet and jewelry making.

ph: what is your favorite thing about denver's creative community? what would you like to see happen in the denver's creative community?

BWS: As I said before I love how open the city is the change, it is still such a young community in many ways so it is much easier to insight the change you'd like to see. I would like to see the creative community continue to work together in ways like what Project Hello is promoting. Getting various creative disciplines together for cooperative events and seeing how we can influence and inspire one another.

ph: if you could offer advice to an emerging creator what would it be?

BWS: Get involved in your community! There are so many people out there who have been where you are and have valuable advice to share with you, don't be afraid to ask, we've all been there. In October 2009 a group of friends and I started an organization to unite the handmade community, the Denver Handmade Alliance. I've found that since this group started I've met so many amazing people facing the same issues that I've struggled with. Through finding this community it's been much easier to reach out and find answers to questions I may have as well as feeling that I am a part of a larger support system.

ph:
within your field, who are your favorite creators?

BWS:  There are so many amazing people within the handmade community but right now my craft crush has been focused on the small object and somethings hiding here. They have a knack for creating things that I need, not want, need!
